The National Rural Health Association has recently published The Rural Homeless: America's Lost Population, an 18-page monograph about the growing number of rural Americans without a fixed place of residence. The monograph's portrait of the rural homeless contrasts with the image of the urban homeless, including a larger proportion of the working poor, more whites, women and two-parent families, and fewer veterans and chronic drug and alcohol abusers.

The monograph discusses the difficulty of reporting the true number of rural homeless, causes of homelessness in rural America, and preventive measures a community can implement. Also discussed are the social, political and economic aspects of the homeless issue and how they relate to rural areas. (Nat'l Rural Health Association)
