Stories of Creativity: Hope and Self-Identity in Homeless Youth

Youth homelessness is a growing social issue in Canada. Although many services have been developed to meet the needs of these youth, they have primarily focused on meeting "basic" needs of shelter, food, and clothing, rather than their recreational needs. Research on youth homelessness has similarly focused on problems of this population, including addiction, abuse, violence, and prostitution. Less research has been conducted on the strengths or interests of street youth. This research focuses on one particular area of interest and strength for many homeless youth: creativity. This exploratory research uses the oral history method to gain insight into perceptions on the role that creativity plays in the lives of five youths.
