This report examines trends in household income in Toronto over the past fifteen years. Results show lower average family incomes between 1990-1995, for almost all CMAs (Census Metropolitan Areas) across Canada. Toronto holds the unenviable position of recording the largest decrease in incomes among al CMAs at 10%. Government deficits forced public sector cutbacks and the private sector undertook major economic restructuring. High interest rates, surging immigration rates, lack of housing and incomes reduced by lowered Employment Insurance and Welfare benefits led to a big drop in economic activity and lower incomes in Toronto compared to the rest of Canada. The impact of the recession and trends in households are examined by using Census data on houshold growth, type, age, income and tenure. In additions the study comaprs the City versus the rest of the GTA to show where the challenges for housing lie.
