The long-term goal of a Canadian information system on the homeless is to collect standard information from each person entering a shelter for homeless persons & families in each of Canada's urban areas. Such a system would enable provision of statistical & analytical reports on shelter utilization & case management, and could assist with program planning, requests for funding, & other issues. This report presents a study of the feasibility of implementing such a system, based on a survey of shelters across Canada regarding their views about a pilot information system for homeless shelters. Issues examined in the study include shelter's computer resources, information storage & processing, data access, confidentiality, privacy, benefits & costs, and use of the information collected. Strategies for implementation of a pilot system and guidelines on system specifications are also proposed. The appendix includes a report describing options for what an information system could include.
